How to Arrange Artificial Flowers in a Vase (So They Look Real)
A good vase arrangement is about proportion, a few focal flowers and a little looseness. You need no floral foam and no special tools – just wire cutters and ten minutes.

Start with the vase
The rule of thumb: the arrangement should be about one and a half times the height of the vase, or one and a half times its width for a low bowl. A narrow-necked vase holds a few stems upright on its own; a wide bowl needs a grid of clear tape across the mouth, or a ball of chicken wire inside, to hold the stems where you put them.
Opaque vases hide the stems, which helps – artificial stems are the least convincing part. If you love a glass vase, fill it with water-look acrylic beads, clear resin, or simply trim the stems short so little shows.
Trim and bend the stems
Artificial stems have a wire core, so they cut with wire cutters, not scissors, and they bend. Cut each stem to a different length so the flower heads sit at different heights, and give every stem a gentle curve – a perfectly straight stem is the first sign of a fake. Bend the leaves open too; they arrive pressed flat from the box.
Place the flowers in three steps
- Greenery first. Put the leaves and branches in to make a loose frame, a little wider than the vase, with some stems leaning out.
- Focal flowers next. Three or five of the largest flowers (odd numbers look natural), placed at different heights and angles, one slightly turned away.
- Fill and soften. Smaller blooms and buds in the gaps, a few trailing stems low over the rim. Stop before it is full; real arrangements have air in them.
The details that make it look real
- Turn the flower heads to face slightly different directions, not all forward.
- Keep one or two buds among the open flowers.
- Use at most three colours, and one of them green.
- Let one stem be taller than the rest.
- Dust the arrangement now and then – see how to clean artificial flowers.

Common Questions
How many artificial flowers do I need for a vase?
For a vase 20–25 cm tall, five to seven focal flowers plus greenery and filler is usually right. For a low bowl on a dining table, three focal flowers and plenty of greenery.
Do I need floral foam for artificial flowers?
No. A grid of clear tape across the vase mouth, or a ball of chicken wire inside an opaque vase, holds stems in place and is easier to rearrange later.
How do I cut artificial flower stems?
With wire cutters, since most stems have a wire core. Cut at an angle so the end hides easily, and cut each stem to a different length.
Can I mix artificial flowers with real greenery?
Yes, as long as the vase holds no water for the artificial stems to sit in. Fresh eucalyptus, for example, dries well and adds scent.
