The Best Artificial Flowers for a Living Room, and Where to Put Them

One well-placed arrangement does more for a living room than three small ones. Here is how to choose the flowers, the size and the spot.

Pick the spot first

Walk into the room and notice where your eye lands: usually the coffee table, the console behind the sofa, or a shelf opposite the door. That is where the arrangement goes. One spot, one arrangement; add a second only if the room is large.

  • Coffee table: low and wide, 15–25 cm tall, so it never blocks the view across the table.
  • Console or sideboard: medium, 35–45 cm tall, placed off-centre with a lamp or a stack of books beside it.
  • Shelf or TV cabinet: small and simple, 20–30 cm, one or two colours.
  • Floor beside a sofa: a tall vase with a few long stems, 70 cm or more, for a room with high ceilings.

Which flowers work best

Living rooms suit flowers with presence and a soft outline: peonies for a full, romantic look; roses for something classic; orchids for a clean, modern room; hydrangeas for volume in a large space; and calla lilies or white tulips for a minimalist one. Add greenery – eucalyptus or olive branches – and the arrangement looks like it came from a garden rather than a shelf.

Hazor Home’s living-room favourites are Quiet Grace (white blooms in a low vase), Golden Hour (warm tones for wood and rattan rooms) and Simply White.

Colour for Malaysian and Singaporean living rooms

Most living rooms here have white walls, a wood or marble floor and plenty of daylight. Blush, cream and white arrangements keep that calm; a single deep colour – burgundy, terracotta – gives a neutral room a focal point. If the sofa or curtains are already a strong colour, pick an arrangement in white and green and let the room carry the colour.

Three mistakes to avoid

  1. Too small. A tiny posy on a large console disappears. When in doubt, go one size up.
  2. Too many colours. Three at most, including green.
  3. Direct afternoon sun. A west-facing window fades any flower, real or not. Keep arrangements a metre or two back from it.

Measure the spot, then check each arrangement’s listed height and width on the shop.

Common Questions

Where should I put artificial flowers in a living room?

Where your eye lands when you walk in: the coffee table, the console behind the sofa, or the shelf facing the door. One arrangement in that spot is usually enough.

What size should a living-room arrangement be?

Low and wide (15–25 cm) on a coffee table; 35–45 cm tall on a console or sideboard; 20–30 cm on a shelf. Most people choose too small.

Which colours suit a living room?

Blush, cream and white for a calm room; one deep colour such as burgundy or terracotta to give a neutral room a focal point; white and green if the room already has strong colour.

Do artificial flowers fade in a sunny living room?

Direct afternoon sun fades colours over time. Keep arrangements a metre or two back from a west-facing window; ordinary daylight is fine.
